Insurgents killed five Iraqi policemen and five soldiers in separate attacks north of Baghdad on Monday, the police and army said.
Al Qaeda wing in Iraq claimed responsibility for a carefully-planned attack on a police checkpoint north of the Iraqi capital in which at least five police officers were killed and four wounded.
Police said the attackers jumped out of a minibus in the early morning and began firing mortar rounds and rocket propelled grenades at the police checkpoint near a base for Interior Ministry commandos in Buhriz, about 60 km (37 miles) from Baghdad.
In a statement posted on a Web site often used by insurgents, al Qaeda put the toll from the assault at 20 dead or injured.
“The launch started by storming the main police checkpoint … which the infidels set up, and the lions, after depending on God, killed and injured everyone there,” it said.
