Two US soldiers missing in Iraq since Friday were abducted at gunpoint by masked guerrillas and may be in the hands of insurgents, witnesses say.

Military search units are looking for the two men, who went missing after their checkpoint was attacked.

Witnesses told the New York Times the pair had been driven away by gunmen. The report has not been confirmed by the US military.

One soldier died at the checkpoint, in a volatile area south of Baghdad.

The area is known as the Triangle of Death because of regular fatal clashes between US forces and Sunni insurgents.
