Fear of Further Nuke Tests Puts World on Edge

The erroneous report of a suspected second North Korean nuclear weapons test illustrates the nuclear jitters triggered in Asia by the secretive communist country’s claimed test of an atomic weapon.

NHK, Japan’s national broadcaster, reported Wednesday that Japanese authorities had detected a tremor in North Korea, just two days after that country claimed to have successfully tested a nuclear bomb.

However, neither South Korea nor the United States could confirm any such seismic activity — although the U.S. Geological Survey said a 5.8-magnitude earthquake had occurred off the east coast of Honshu, Japan.

Finally, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a parliamentary panel on Wednesday that his government had no evidence of a second test.
